Traveling can be expensive, especially if you want to venture outside the U.S. and explore the far reaches of the world. But not every destination has to break the bank. Sure, the flight might set you back, but once you arrive in certain places, it’s budget-friendly all the way.

We’ve rounded up 5 inexpensive countries to travel to. And while we picked these places based on their current currency exchange rate and relative affordability, they still make for great bucket-list destinations.

Vietnam

Exchange Rate: $1 = 23,172.50 Vietnamese dong

While Vietnam is not currently a destination “on sale” based on its exchange rate, it remains at the top of the list of cheapest countries to visit. It offers incredible value despite a booming economy fueled in part by the US-China trade war. Visitors struggle to spend more than a few dollars per meal and locally brewed beer costs as little as $0.20 a glass. Additionally, hotel rooms offer incredible value; as little as $10 will get you a clean and comfortable place to stay for a night. While some cities like Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Hai Phong may seem to be overflowing with tourists, many parts of Vietnam remain relatively undiscovered.

Indonesia

Exchange Rate: $1 = 13,961.50 Indonesian RupiahIn

Indonesia, $100 USD purchased goods only costs $30. It’s a fantastic exchange rate, making it one of the top cheapest international travel destinations. While Bali remains the most popular city to visit, the country also boasts world class diving, luxurious and shockingly affordable hotels, endless beaches and a hubbub of cultural experiences.

Kyrgyzstan

Exchange Rate: $1 = 69.85 Kyrgystani Som

While you’ve probably never heard of Kyrgyzstan, it is one of the most affordable countries in the world to visit right now. This Central Asian country is incredibly interesting, both in history and culture, and is known for its glorious mountain ranges and green pastures. You can spend time in the capital city of Bishkek or explore the countryside, which is home to nomadic shepherds. The resort town of Cholpon Ata makes for a great summer destination. The lakeside Balykchy is also worth a visit, where the average hotel room will cost you less than $70 per night.

Ukraine

Exchange Rate: $1 = 23.56 Ukrainian hryvnia

Ukraine is one of the most affordable countries to visit in Europe. Hostels in Kyiv can be found for under $10/night and hearty meals will cost around $20/day. With the average monthly salary in Ukraine being under $400 USD, it’s no surprise that the prices here are incredibly low. When visiting, be sure to take a day tour from Kyiv to Chernobyl to see the haunting remains from the 1986 nuclear disaster during your visit. Tours start around $100 USD per person but are well worth it since it’s probably the most expensive purchase you’ll make on that trip.

Mexico

Exchange Rate: $1 = 19.06 Mexican peso

The current exchange rate between the U.S. and Mexico works in our favor. According to Currency Exchange International, the U.S. price level index is 55.00 to the USD 113.00. In other words, you can purchase $48 worth of goods equivalent to $100 in the U.S. It’s a great deal. Unfortunately, Mexico is an often-misunderstood travel destination. Either it’s portrayed as a dangerous place in sensationalized news reports, or it has been reduced to just the overrated hipster enclave of Tulum. Most of Mexico is perfectly safe to visit. And there’s a wealth of culture and adventure to unlock. The classic travel route runs from the buzzing Mexico City to Oaxaca and Chiapas states, ending on the Yucatan Peninsula. Due to the plunging value of the Mexican peso, you can get almost twice as many pesos per Dollar or Euro today than you could just five years ago.

It’s a Great Time to Travel

It’s never been easier to travel on a tight budget. The spread of the sharing economy, deals on flights, and access to affordable accommodation have all made travel more accessible to the average person. And, if you’re an American, the strong dollar has really made a lot of places cheap to visit.
